Recipients must be Harwich homeowners and fall into one of three categories: veterans, disabled or seniors
The deadline to submit an application to be considered a recipient for this year’s Harwich Big Fix is less than three weeks away. Organized by Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC), the Big Fix assists income-eligible veterans, seniors, and disabled homeowners in one town on Cape Cod with small home repairs during one day each fall.
This year, the Big Fix fundraiser is coming to Harwich on Saturday, September 22. The deadline for homeowners to submit a recipient application is Friday, June 1.
“If you know someone who is a veteran, senior or disabled and you think they might be able to benefit from the Big Fix, encourage them to apply,” said David Quinn, HAC’s assistant director of housing development. “This is our final push for applications. June 1 is the deadline.”
Online applications are available at HAC’s website, www.haconcapecod.org. Hard copies of the Big Fix application can be found at the Brooks Free Library at 793 Main Street; the Harwich Community Center at 100 Oak Street; the Harwich Chamber of Commerce at 1 School House Road; Hands of Hope Outreach at 49 Route 28; the Family Pantry of Cape Cod at 133 Queen Anne Road; and HAC’s office at 460 West Main Street, Hyannis.
Harwich residents with questions about the Big Fix application should contact HAC Project Coordinator Romy Maimon at rmaimon@haconcapecod.org or at 508-771-5400, ext. 103.
Now in its ninth year, the Big Fix mobilizes volunteers to raise funds for HAC’s housing programs while also conducting minor home repairs for their neighbors in need. The Big Fix started in 2010 in Barnstable and has since been to Sandwich, Dennis, Mashpee, Yarmouth, Bourne, Brewster, and last year to Falmouth where a record 340 volunteers assisted 18 homeowners.
In addition to recipients, HAC is seeking volunteers who are interested in forming a fundraising team and/or donating their time, skills and efforts to the day of service. For more information on Big Fix volunteer and fundraising opportunities, contact HAC Volunteer Coordinator Mary Everett-Patriquin at volunteer@haconcapecod.org or 508-771-5400, ext. 279.
HAC is also seeking sponsors for the event. To become a Big Fix sponsor, contact HAC Event and Resource Development Coordinator Deanna Bussiere at dbussiere@haconcapecod.org or 508-771-5400, ext. 270.
Funds raised as part of the Big Fix help to defer the costs of organizing the event and also go to support HAC’s housing programs on Cape Cod and the Islands which include operating four family homeless shelters; conducting homeless outreach to those living in the streets and woods of Cape Cod; homelessness prevention; offering financial literacy classes; developing affordable housing; and managing nearly 1,200 Section 8 vouchers in the region.
