The Blue Rock Golf Course in South Yarmouth, MA will be hosting their 13th Annual Turkey Shoot-Out & Food Pantry Drive on November 18th and 19th, joining forces for the sixth year in a row with Create the Good. Create the Good is a local non-profit started in 2010 by a group of Yarmouth parents to place a food pantry in every Dennis-Yarmouth school. The constant need requires ongoing community donations to supply the shelves. During the 2-day event, as many as 150 golfers will play the course with a portion of their entry fees donated to Create the Good. Also, many of the golfers who win turkeys through closest-to-the-pin contests donate them back to the Thanksgiving efforts.
The public is encouraged to drop off canned goods, non-perishable food items and grocery store gift cards to the pro shop throughout the weekend as volunteers will be on site creating the Thanksgiving Dinner bags. Last year, Thanksgiving dinners were provided for 94 local families and the goal this year is 125 dinners. Any extra donations will be used to fulfill last-minute requests and stock the shelves. According to Create the Good founder, Stephanie Flynn, “The Turkey Shoot-out is our biggest event of the year, but there is a year-round need throughout the Dennis-Yarmouth school system and we would love to expand our program to help students who need assistance with weekend food throughout the year. More than half of the students in the school system are currently receiving free or reduced lunch so the need is great.”
PGA Head Professional Patrick Fannon said, “We are so excited to once again work with the parents and volunteers of Create the Good as they help families in need. Working together as a community is important to all of us.” Generous golfers have already filled the tournament for Saturday Nov. 18th, but there are still openings for the Sunday Nov. 19th tournament. Golf registration ($40 per golfer) and additional information on donations are available at the Blue Rock Golf Course at 508-398-9295.
