Cape and Islands Workforce Board Celebrates National Employ Older Workers Week with Age Forward Employer Recognition Program

THREE LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TO BE HONORED ON SEPT. 25th

Hyannis (September 19, 2018) – Workers over age 55 make up over 30% of the Cape and Islands workforce—a percentage predicted to grow as many over 65 seek to re-enter the workplace. Local businesses that understand the strengths, preferences and needs of our aging workforce have an edge when competing for talent in a tight labor market.
That’s why the MassHire Cape and Islands Workforce Board launched the Age Forward Employer Recognition Program earlier this summer to begin to identify those employers whose forward thinking business practices enable them to successfully recruit and retain older workers. Nominations were solicited from customers, employees and business owners themselves. Nominees were then asked to complete a questionnaire detailing their personnel practices in arenas important to older workers: scheduling, benefits, training and retirement. Now all the scores have been tallied and we’re ready to reveal this year’s winning organizations.
The competition’s winners will be announced at an awards breakfast at the Resort and Conference Center in Hyannis on September 25, 2018. Members of the awards selection committee and representatives of the selected organizations will be available to speak to the press following the ceremony. The event is free but pre-registration is required. Employers, small business owners and members of the press should r.s.v.p. to mgolden@MassHire-capeandislands.com or 508-862-6107 by Thursday, Sept. 20.
This year’s winners represent the resiliency of our region’s business community and illustrate its ability to adapt to emerging trends. “Each small business is unique,” notes Workforce Board Executive Director David Augustinho. “But we hope that by shining a spotlight on what works for these Age Forward employers we will encourage others to make changes in how they relate to those job seekers over 55.”
The Age Forward Employer Awards is a joint initiative of the MassHire Cape and Islands Workforce Board, MassHire Cape and Islands Career Center and Elder Services of Cape Cod & Islands.
