SOUTH YARMOUTH—Earlier this year, The Cape Cod Foundation received $90,000 from a private charitable foundation that supports nonprofit organizations in Massachusetts. The Foundation recently awarded these funds, which were designated to support capital projects and purchases, to 11 nonprofit organizations addressing hunger and homelessness on Cape Cod.
“When we learned about this grant opportunity, we made it a top priority to apply,” said Kristin O’Malley, President and CEO of the Foundation. “As a community foundation, we have a broad overview of the needs within our community, yet sometimes we do not have the resources we need to address those needs. The opportunity to make grants specifically for capital expenditures serves as a nice complement to our capacity-building funding, where we have not traditionally made large capital investments. Through this generous support, we were able to deploy resources to help meet immediate unmet needs.”
Since the scope of the grants was very targeted, O’Malley said the Foundation contacted several organizations with broad regional impact directly for proposals.
“These grants helped several nonprofits with centralized and mobile food pantries purchase commercial-grade refrigerators or freezers to increase their fresh food distribution to clients. They also helped purchase new windows, doors and other security improvements for local shelters.”
O’Malley added, the grants also supported the purchase of dining tables and chairs for a community kitchen, HVAC system repairs for a shelter, and solar panels for two affordable homes built by Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod.
