(Hyannis, March 21, 2019)  Cape Cod Hospital (CCH) received a five-star rating from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in its latest Hospital Compare ratings review. CMS recently released its annual review and CCH was one of just seven hospitals in Massachusetts, and one of 293 in the U.S., to earn the top rating. It is the second consecutive year that CCH has received a five-star rating.
Falmouth Hospital (FH) received a 4-star rating in the CMS review. Both CCH and FH have an ‘A’ rating from the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Compare program’s most recent ratings, which were announced last fall.
The CMS Hospital Compare’s overall ratings system was created to help healthcare consumers choose the best hospital for their care. The ratings summarize a variety of measures across seven areas of quality into a star rating for each hospital. Hospitals report data to be considered in their rating to CMS through a vehicle known as the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program.
The methodology calculates scores for seven groups of measures, including:

  • Mortality
  • Safety of Care
  • Readmission
  • Patient Experience
  • Effectiveness of Care
  • Timeliness of Care
  • Efficient Use of Medical Imaging

In addition to its own information, CMS uses data from a several other sources to evaluate each hospital’s performance in these seven areas, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and patient surveys from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey conducted by hospitals. Medicare enrollment and claims data are also used.
The CMS Hospital Compare ratings look at 57 quality measures, such as the patient experience, timeliness and effectiveness of care, complications, unplanned visit rates and value of care, all of which are extremely important to CCH and FH, according to Michael K. Lauf, president and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare, the parent organization of the two hospitals.
“Patient safety and quality are at the center of all we do at Cape Cod Healthcare,” he said. “Our physicians and other providers, nurses, technicians, quality control staff, and environmental services and other departments have worked extremely hard to make sure that Cape Cod Hospital – and all Cape Cod Healthcare facilities and programs – are places where patients can be assured they will receive the absolute best and safest care available. It’s extremely gratifying that this commitment has been recognized with a five-star rating from CMS.”
