December 4, 2019 – In 2020 we celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the Pilgrim landing in Plymouth, MA. Let us not forget, they first landed in Provincetown on Cape Cod. Had the shoals off Chatham not proved so intimidating, the Pilgrims actually might have settled there before discovering either Provincetown or Plymouth. The Pilgrim Landing Trail is intended to educate visitors and be a unique opportunity to visit these locations and explore the experiences of the Pilgrims on Cape Cod. History lovers will enjoy a great day trip, or weekend escape, while touring the historic Cape Cod locations and stopping along the way for lunch or dinner at one of the many area restaurants.
While the world’s attention will be on Plimoth Colony come 2020 – its 400th anniversary –Cape Cod will be commemorating the historical events too. Today, there is a 55-mile trail across what is now the Outer and Lower Cape that you can travel to trace the explorations and experiences of the Pilgrims. The Cape Cod Pilgrim Landing Trail includes the following museums and stops: Pilgrim Monument & Provincetown Museum, Monument on Corn Hill, First Encounter Beach, Chatham Light House, Atwood House & Museum, Nickerson Family Homestead and Mashpee Wampanoag Museum.
This Pilgrim Landing Trail is supported by a grant from CARE for the Cape & Islands, committed to preserving and protecting Cape Cod cultural and historical treasures. CARE for the Cape & Islands educates and facilitates relationships among travelers, businesses, local organizations, environmental initiatives, and residents. Working with travel industry businesses, CARE creates opportunities for travelers to contribute to local efforts to promote long-term environmental conservation and cultural heritage preservation. “We are so pleased to support the development of the Pilgrim Trail, highlighting an important piece of Cape Cod and America’s history.
