Housing Assistance Corporation seeks recipients for Harwich Big Fix

This fall, Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) will be bringing is 9th Annual Big Fix to Harwich and it is seeking recipients who can benefit from small repairs done on their homes.
The annual HAC event mobilizes volunteers to raise funds for the agency’s programs and to conduct minor home repairs for income-eligible veterans, seniors and disabled homeowners in one town on Cape Cod.
Started in 2010, the Big Fix has been to eight towns on the Cape so far, providing support to 108 homeowners. Last year, it was held in Falmouth where a record 340 volunteers assisted 18 homeowners. On Saturday, September 22, the Big Fix will be held in Harwich.
“The idea of the Big Fix is to help people most in need do the basic maintenance on their home that they can’t do themselves and don’t have the income to keep up themselves,” said David Quinn, HAC’s assistant director of Housing Development.
The Harwich Board of Selectmen recently received an update on the event from HAC staff. HAC now begins the first step – find recipients for the Big Fix. Homeowners must fall into at least one of three categories: veteran, disabled or seniors.
Those interested in applying can do so online at www.haconcapecod.org. Hard copies of the application are at the Brooks Free Library at 793 Main Street; the Harwich Community Center at 100 Oak Street; the Harwich Chamber of Commerce at 1 School House Road; Hands of Hope Outreach at 49 Route 28; the Family Pantry of Cape Cod at 133 Queen Anne Road; and HAC’s office at 460 West Main Street, Hyannis.
The deadline to apply to be a recipient of the Big Fix is Friday, June 1.
Along with recipients, HAC is looking for volunteers who are interested in forming a fundraising team and/or donating their time, skills and efforts to the day of service. For more information on Big Fix volunteer and fundraising opportunities, contact HAC Volunteer Coordinator Mary Everett-Patriquin at volunteer@haconcapecod.org or 508-771-5400, ext. 279.
HAC is also seeking sponsors for the event. To become a Big Fix sponsor, contact HAC Event and Resource Development Coordinator Deanna Bussiere at dbussiere@haconcapecod.org or 508-771-5400, ext. 270.
Funds raised as part of the Big Fix help to defer the costs of organizing the event and also go to support HAC’s housing programs on Cape Cod and the Islands which include operating four family homeless shelters; conducting homeless outreach to those living in the streets and woods of Cape Cod; homelessness prevention; offering financial literacy classes; developing affordable housing; and managing nearly 1,200 Section 8 vouchers in the region.
