West Barnstable and Falmouth – An offer to purchase land near the intersection of Brick Kiln
Road and Gifford Street has been accepted, according to Stacie Peugh, President & CEO,
YMCA Cape Cod and Christ Lutheran Church Pastor Carl Evans and Judith Riordan MacKenzie, President of the Church Council. The Church, located at 485 Brick Kiln Road in Falmouth, has agreed to sell 7.1 acres of land to the Y in West Barnstable. Previous market research identified this area as the best possible choice for the new facility.
The site provides easy access for Upper Cape residents, proximity to Falmouth High School, ample parking, and outdoor space for programs and activities. The new Y facility will provide swimming programs for all ages, a fitness center, and numerous other features to be finalized in the coming year. Falmouth Aquatics, a group working to bring a pool to the Upper Cape, partnered with the Y on this project over a year ago. Y Board committees have been working on additional studies, fundraising, community outreach, site logistics, and right-sizing design of
the proposed new facility.
This land acquisition represents a major milestone. Schematic designs of the building will be finalized in the year ahead and will be shared with the public. There are a number of contingencies within the Offer to Purchase agreement as the Y completes the complex and often lengthy due diligence and permitting processes that precede construction. The new Y must meet the highest standards of environmental sustainability and safety. The purchase price of the land is $550,000 and the agreement calls for quarterly payments starting in January 2020, ongoing for up to four years, at which time final closing is
expected. The Y’s capital campaign planning to raise funds not only for the land, but for the facility itself, has been ongoing for three years and is hoping to see dramatic leadership momentum with this announcement.
The initiative to bring a Y facility to Falmouth and the Upper Cape began over seven years ago when a group of Falmouth residents approached the Mid Cape Y with their vision. Over those years, the Falmouth Wants a Y committee has raised over $100,000 to pay for the advance phases: market and fundraising feasibility studies, schematic design, and other expenses related to pre-planning to determine best location, community support and long-term sustainability. All advance studies indicate clear need and readiness for Upper Cape communities that will be served: Falmouth, Bourne, Mashpee and Sandwich.
The new Y will operate as a branch of YMCA Cape Cod in Barnstable. “The number one question we are asked during informational sessions about the new Upper Cape Y is: ‘where is it going to be located and what is it going to look like?’ says Y CEO Stacie Peugh. “We are thrilled to share this news of an ideal site and look forward to sharing more detailed design plans and launching a capital campaign with key community leaders. I look forward to the coming years of bringing a Y facility to Falmouth and having Christ Lutheran Church as our closest neighbor and partner in service to the community. We have lots of work to do to make it happen. We have many talented and dedicated volunteers in the Upper Cape
area who want to bring this Y into Falmouth and will work tirelessly to make it happen.” President of Christ Lutheran Church Council Judith Riordan-MacKenzie adds: “Our congregation is excited about this partnership. The Y’s focus on healthy living, social responsibility and youth development is so closely aligned with the Lutheran faith focus which is service. We share the goals of providing support for families and children, our senior citizens, and a diverse community. All are welcome here and all are welcome at the Y. This is not simply a transaction for us. We envision a partnership between our programs and the Y’s over the years ahead. It brings us great satisfaction to know that our church will be part of the history of the Upper Cape Y’s facility and that we will be part of theirs.”
