BUZZARDS BAY, OSTERVILLE, MA, ISSUED AUGUST 13, 2024…Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA; www.maritime.edu), a top-ranked public university with undergraduate degree programs focusing on science, engineering, technology, math, and business that blend academics and experiential learning, is proud of its 20-year partnership with the Cape Cod Collaborative (www.capecodcollaborative.org) as co-founders of the Advanced Studies & Leadership Program (ASLP).
The dynamic, two-week summer learning experience held on the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s campus is designed for high achieving 8th and 9th grade students from across Cape Cod, the Islands, and surrounding areas. This year’s affiliated districts included North River Collaborative, New Bedford, and Plymouth with a total of 175 students completing the program.
The exciting two-week summer college-like residential experience emphasizes leadership and development, and project-oriented instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) areas, and the Humanities.
Students participated in four-day modules, 3.5 hours each day, of exciting hands-on study that included demonstrations and interactive work utilizing the Academy’s world class technology, including simulators and its state-of-the-art science labs.
This year’s ASLP commencement ceremony, held on July 20th at the Academy awarded academic scholarships to 20 area students who demonstrated leadership qualities throughout their time in the program. The scholarships will cover the cost of tuition for the students’ four-year attendance at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
The following scholarship recipients were announced during the recent commencement ceremony: Aiden Ramos, from Barnstable; Mason Fagan from Bourne; Reese Ferguson, Jacob Couture, Theodore Durley from Dennis-Yarmouth; Estelle Harmon, Sheldon Mapp, Liam Webb, Myles Doherty from Falmouth; Emma Gogol, Eloise Wooten from Monomoy; Charlotte Cramer from Martha’s Vineyard; Madison Wright from Mashpee; Prisha Bajracharya, Jacob Waitt from Sandwich; Carnell Clarke, Amber Besse, Danisha Woodley from Wareham; and Giavanna Bunel, Sean Czaja from North River Collaborative Districts, Abington and East Bridgewater, respectively.
Now in its 20th year, the ASLP was first envisioned by Massachusetts Maritime Academy President Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, USMS, and faculty of the Cape Cod Collaborative. Over the past two decades, the program that aims to inspire high performing youth from Cape Cod, the Islands, and surrounding areas to reach for academic excellence has become widely recognized for its success.

McDonald, USMS, president of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. “Our partnership with the Cape Cod Collaborative has educated and empowered so many youths over the past 20 years. We’re excited to see many of these students coming back and enrolling at the Academy to continue their educational journeys.”
