October 24, 2018Yarmouth Port, MA–The Philanthropy Partners of the Cape and Islands announced today the recipients of the 2018 Distinguished Service to Philanthropy Awards. Awards in four categories—Outstanding Volunteer, Outstanding Business/Organization, Outstanding Youth/Youth Organization and Outstanding Philanthropist─ will be presented during a luncheon ceremony at the 22nd Annual Philanthropy Day on Cape Cod, Tuesday, October 30 at The Resort and Conference Center in Hyannis.
Provincetown resident Steven Roderick is the 2018 Outstanding Volunteer. Roderick is widely recognized as an impassioned, energetic volunteer by multiple Outer and Lower Cape organizations including the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Truro Chamber of Commerce, the Provincetown Film Society, Cape Cod Children’s Place, Lower Cape Ambulance, Provincetown Community Compact’s Swim for Life, among others. In many instances, Roderick has applied his accounting background to serve organizations in board positions. His time, energy and dedication have also contributed to countless successful fundraisers in addition to his starting a GoFundMe campaign for displaced employee relief and new firefighting equipment after a serious fire destroyed a popular Provincetown restaurant last May.
Chatham High School student Sage Barnes is the 2018 Outstanding Youth. Barnes is the Youth Representative of the Cape Cod Theatre Company/Harwich Junior Theatre Board and a High Honors sophomore student at Monomoy Regional High School. Described as “self-determined,” Barnes also volunteers back stage for the theatre’s main stage productions where she virtually grew up. She has also been involved for many years with the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s “Muscle Walk”. Barnes is personally challenged by muscular dystrophy and has become a Muscular Dystrophy Association ambassador, helping to raise both awareness and funds around treatment and a cure of the disease.
Nauset Disposal of Orleans is the 2018 Outstanding Business/Organization. Each year Nauset Disposal contributes to more than 100 nonprofits through monetary donations, sponsorships and in-kind donations. Voted by company employees, Nauset Disposal directs the majority of its community investment funds to helping organizations focused on the Environment, Veterans’ Issues, Basic Human Needs, and Children’s Services. The company mounts its own annual “Trash Bash” fundraiser at its Orleans headquarters to benefit Cape Cod nonprofits. The event collaborates with local businesses while encouraging customers to participate and engage in its community outreach. Nauset Disposal Founder and President Shawn DeLude also promotes volunteerism among his employee base to further strengthen the community.
Orleans and Florida resident Richard “Dick” Cuda and his late wife Ellie are being recognized as the 2018 Outstanding Philanthropists. In 2008, the Cudas underwrote the cost of Cape Cod Healthcare’s Cuda Women’s Health Center and a reflection garden at the Hyannis ambulatory medical complex with a donation of $2.5 million. In addition to their volunteer service and philanthropic commitment to Cape Cod Healthcare, the Cudas also supported the Cape Symphony, Cape Cod Museum of Art (where Mr. Cuda is an Honorary Trustee), and The Cape Cod Foundation. The Cudas lived by example and worked hard to instill a similar philanthropic spirit in their own children.  In doing so, the Cuda children and grandchildren are active philanthropists of causes about which they are most passionate.
