Provincetown, Mass. (December 18, 2018) – The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum (PMPM) today announced that the Bradford Access Project achieved another major milestone by securing all regulatory approvals from town boards. The final approval came from the Provincetown Planning Board on December 13, 2018 when they voted unanimously (4-0) to approve the project. Bradford Access Project creates a new front door for the monument and museum by building a funicular to connect the PMPM’s campus to Bradford Street. Now, the project moves toward the final design and construction phase.
PMPM Trustee and Chair of the Bradford Access Project, Paul de Ruyter, says that he is looking forward to the next phase of the project. “We are very pleased with the outcome of the public process and the approval by the town to move forward on this unique project that will provide better access to the Monument grounds and connect the property to the downtown of Provincetown,” said de Ruyter.
He says that the next steps for the Bradford Access Project include developing final design plans, obtaining building permits and start the construction process. De Ruyter and the professional team will be working on a construction timeline in the next few weeks. The actual construction date for ground breaking has not been established.
PMPM Board of Trustee President Courtney Hurst says that the board is committed to the funicular project as a solution to the long-term problem of the historic property being disconnected from the bustling commercial area of Provincetown, as well as being hard to get to.
“We are on our way towards our goal to finally connect the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, both physically and philosophically – to the town, its residents and the thousands of visitors that come here each year,” said Hurst. “The Bradford Access Project team has worked diligently with the town throughout the public process and we are now ready to move on to the next phase leading to construction.”
PMPM Executive Director, Dr. K. David Weidner states that “The Pilgrim Monument has been an historic symbol of Provincetown since the laying of the first cornerstone in 1907. The Bradford Access Project will provide access to the Monument and Museum to create a new historical legacy.”
Construction for the Bradford Access Project will be managed by Jay Cashman, Inc. of Quincy, founded by Jay Cashman whose ancestor was involved in the building of the Monument that started in 1907 and finished in 1910. Cashman is donating his firm’s services to the project. Other team members are Coastal Engineering Company Inc. of Orleans, landscape architects Hawk Design, Inc. of Sandwich and architects Brown, Lindquist, Fenuccio & Raber of Yarmouthport, Safe Harbor Environmental Consultants of Wellfleet, McMahon Transportation Engineers & Planners of Taunton, BOLD Lighting Design Firm of Los Angeles and New York City; and Outdoor Engineering Inc. of Colorado and Switzerland.
