On Friday, May 11, Mid-Cape Home Centers hosted Massachusetts State Representative Timothy Whalen for a meeting and tour of its South Dennis location at 465 Route 134, South Dennis, MA.
Representative Whelan, who represents the 1st Barnstable district, had the opportunity to tour Mid-Cape Home Centers’ store, as well as the Estimating Department, custom millwork shop, and lumber yard. The Representative also met with company leaders including Jack Stevenson, President of Mid-Cape Home Centers, to discuss the needs of small businesses in the area.
Stevenson shares, “We really enjoyed Representative Whelan’s visit. Due to his background as a Trooper, he really understands a lot of the issues that affect our business. One of the biggest industry issues is transportation, and Tim has a great understanding of that area, DOT regulation, along with traffic and the bridges. We were happy to hear his insight on those issues. Plus, his genuine passion for the Cape is obvious.”
Representative Whelan also shared insights into a legislative push for local vocational education, the need to rely on local businesses to help keep local youth living and working in our community, and affordable housing, an area in which they have been doing due diligence with recent success obtaining a housing trust in Brewster. The more that the community and local businesses help advocate for these issues, the more success we will see in the near future of Cape Cod.
It was refreshing for the Mid-Cape team to hear about Representative Whelan’s own regular experiences shopping at Mid-Cape, in an effort to keep money in the local economy rather than with national big box retailers. Team member Steve Zbell adds, “As a long-term customer, it was refreshing to hear about Representative Whelan’s understanding and strong focus on our local building community.”
Mid-Cape Home Centers hosted the Representative as part of the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association’s Legislative Yard Tour initiative, which connects lumberyards throughout the Northeast with their elected officials in order to share the needs of local businesses.
