The inaugural running of the Seaside Le Mans – The Race for the Cape Cod Community, took place in 2001, just four days after the terrorist attacks of September Eleventh.
DeWitt Davenport, CEO of The Davenport Companies, and founder of the Seaside Le Mans, said that first race, which took place amid the sorrow of Nine Eleven, helped provide a rallying call for Cape Cod to stand strong in times of adversity.
“I was encouraged by the many members of the community back then who said we had to go forward with the race that day. We were Americans and we needed unity for our country,” said Davenport.
As they finished construction of the track for the first race, Davenport said he was heartened to see hundreds of American flags that lined the course. Since then, the race has grown in the number of sponsors, drivers, and spectators.
Bourne resident and 9th District Congressman William Keating (D), who has served as the race’s Grand Marshal for several years in a row, praised Davenport for continuing the tradition for more than two decades, and growing the race each year.
“It’s one thing to start something like this. The hardest thing is to sustain it and keep building it. It takes someone with perseverance,” said Keating.
“The fabric of our country is woven by communities coming together. When you look at points in our history, the Civil War, you look at the World Wars that we had and the calls to action we had…it’s the way people in these communities came together to defend our country,” said Keating.
The congressman said that sense of community is the hallmark of the Seaside Le Mans.
He also recognized the five 2025 beneficiaries for all the work they do to improve the lives of Cape Cod residents and urged the racers, sponsors, and spectators to embrace the unity that Seaside Le Mans creates and bring it back to their own communities.
The Davenport Companies underwrites the entire cost of the event and works in partnership with The Cape Cod Foundation to manage the sponsorship donations. Every dollar raised goes directly to the charities.
The 2025 edition of the race began with an opening ceremony that included patriotic music from the Cape Cod Moonlighters Big Band, The Singing Trooper Dan Clark, and a military flyover.
