Cape & Islands– Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands (BBBSCCI) is making a real difference in the lives of nearly 500 youth on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Plymouth, by creating and nurturing transformational one-to-one mentoring relationships. This year, Big Brother Corey Frederickson and Big Sister Laura Dulac are being honored and recognized as the Cape & Islands Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year for their immense impact on their Littles.
Every year, Big Brothers Big Sisters nominates one Big Brother and one Big Sister to be considered for their title of Big of the Year. To win the title, the mentor needs to exhibit superlative influence over his/her Little throughout their match, and both have done so for the past 12 years combined.
Corey, a resident of Marstons Mills and Sgt. at Barnstable Police Department, has been matched with his Little Brother, Brady, from Sandwich, for almost 4 years as part of the K9 Sgt. Sean M. Gannon Bigs with Badges Program. Brady, now 12, says Corey has been a big support in his life. Brady’s mom, Allison, shared the following in their nomination: “Brady absolutely adores Corey. He truly looks forward to their outings and always has a smile when we talk about Corey. Corey has helped build Brady’s confidence and treats him like one of his own.”
Laura, a resident of Harwich, has been matched with her Little Sister, Linda of Brewster, for nearly 7 years. Over the years, they’ve done a lot. Some of Linda’s favorite memories with Laura were attending a splatter paint class and going to a hockey game. “We just get each other,” says Linda, now 14. “We were perfectly matched. I’m not sure if all Littles feel this way, but it is perfect.”
The agency will formally honor Frederickson and Dulac at their 25th Anniversary Golf For Kids Tournament on May 19 at Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee. Reservations, and donations in support of these outstanding Bigs can be made at https://support.emassbigs.org/event/cape-golf-for-kids/e610178
While Brady and Linda have been fortunate enough to experience the positive impact of having a Big, BBBSCCI is always in need of volunteers to serve as mentors across the Cape, Islands and Plymouth. The agency notes that the need for male volunteers is four times greater due to the large number of boys who are referred to the program.
