Wellfleet, Mass., January 6, 2025 – Outer Cape Health Services, a federally qualified community health center serving the ten outermost towns of Cape Cod, is reminding the community of its comprehensive behavioral health and substance use counseling services during the post-holiday season.
This time of year presents unique challenges for many, as short days, cold weather, and the post-holiday lull can exacerbate feelings of depression and anxiety. For some, these seasonal struggles can contribute to an increase in substance use. Studies indicate alcohol and substance use often spike during the holiday season, leading to heightened risks in January and beyond.
To address these needs, OCHS offers a full range of services to support individuals managing mental health and substance use concerns. The A.I.M. Wellness Center, located at 2700 Route 6 in Wellfleet, provides year-round, in-person behavioral health and substance use counseling. Staffed by licensed professionals, the center adopts a holistic approach to treatment, incorporating individual and group therapy, workshops, yoga, and movement therapy to offer multiple pathways to wellness.
“At OCHS, we recognize the unique struggles that can emerge during this season,” said OCHS CEO, Dr. Damian Archer. “The combination of post-holiday stress and the ongoing opioid crisis makes it crucial to offer accessible and compassionate care. Geographical isolation in the off-season also plays a role in exacerbating symptoms for Outer Cape
residents. Our team is committed to providing the support and tools residents need to navigate toward a lasting recovery.”
In addition to group counseling, individual therapy sessions, and case management, OCHS also works closely with partner agencies to connect patients to additional community resources, including housing, employment assistance, education, and legal advice.
“The winter months often bring a perfect storm of factors that can strain mental health and recovery efforts,” said Brianne Smith, Director of Behavioral Health at OCHS. “Our services are designed to provide comprehensive support, offering care and tools for managing both substance use and associated mental health conditions.”
Patients can access OCHS recovery services through referrals from primary care providers, behavioral health clinicians, self-referral, or referrals from treatment facilities, court officers, and other community health organizations.
