SANDWICH, Mass., April 24, 2025 – On April 22, 2025, Earth Day, the Town of Sandwich finalized the $3.3 million purchase of more than 86.5- acres of undeveloped property for water quality, preservation and future wastewater infrastructure needs.
The property, which encompasses three parcels on Discovery Hill Road and Kiah’s Way, was authorized and approved for sale to the town in late March by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts.
The property has been purchased with funds allocated by Town Meeting through the town’s Water Infrastructure Investment Fund (WIIF). Acquisition of real property is an expressly allowed use of the WIIF fund and does not require an additional Town Meeting vote.
“The purchase of this unique and rare large property offering is a major investment in the future of the Town of Sandwich to meet its anticipated wastewater and water resource protection needs,” said Sandwich Town Manager George Dunham. “The property acquisition will provide the town with sufficient acreage, should a regional wastewater treatment solution at Joint Base Cape Cod not be achievable, to meet 100% of projected volume from all phases of its Comprehensive Water Resources Management Plan.”
The town will likely set aside significant acreage for environmental and preservation purposes and will recover more than $440,000 in back taxes owed on the property.
