Hyannis, Mass., March 4, 2025 – In recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month this March, Cape Cod Healthcare is highlighting the critical importance of prevention and early detection in the fight against colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States, with an estimated 153,000 new cases diagnosed annually, according to the American Cancer Society. While rates have been rising among younger adults, colorectal cancer remains highly preventable and treatable when detected early through routine screenings.
Medical experts recommend individuals at average risk begin regular screenings at age 45. Those with a family history of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or genetic predispositions should discuss earlier and more frequent screenings with their healthcare provider. Additionally, individuals experiencing symptoms like persistent changes in bowel habits, bleeding, or unexplained weight loss should seek medical evaluation.
“Regular screenings and a healthy lifestyle are absolutely vital in preventing colorectal cancer,” said Dr. Ryan M. Carlson, MD, a colon and rectal surgeon at Cape Cod Healthcare. Early detection through routine colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for screening, allowing physicians to detect and remove precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer and identify early-stage cancers, significantly improving treatment outcomes.
In addition, Cape Cod Healthcare offers a free, five-minute online assessment to help individuals understand their personal risk of developing colon and rectal cancer. For more information about the importance of colorectal screening options or to participate in the online assessment, click here.
