December 3, 2024 (Cape Cod, MA) – With offshore wind increasingly playing a bigger role in meeting our country’s clean energy goals, Cape Cod Technology Council will welcome Avangrid’s Rachel Martin to talk about her company’s contributions to these efforts at its First Friday on December 6, 7:30-9 am, at Cape Cod Community College.

Martin, who manages outreach and public affairs for Avangrid’s offshore wind projects in Massachusetts, will provide an overview of the company’s offshore wind projects along the East Coast as well as its broader renewable energy portfolio.

“This is a timely talk on an important topic that will have ramifications for how our state and country work to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels,” said Tech Council Executive Director Steve Smith. “We’re excited to learn more about what Avangrid is currently doing and its long-term work to utilize renewable energy to meet the demands of our region’s power grid.”

As part of next month’s First Friday, Martin will also provide an overview of the ISO-New England grid system, the state’s clean energy goals, and how offshore wind energy is contributing to meeting those goals. She will also give a snapshot of new technologies being used across offshore wind.

Avangrid is the partial owner of Vineyard Wind, the nation’s first utility-scale offshore wind energy project over 15 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. The project will generate clean, renewable energy for over 400,000 homes and businesses across the Commonwealth, reducing carbon emissions by over 1.6 million tons per year.

In October, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management provisionally awarded Avangrid two wind leases located offshore from the Outer Cape. The awards were the first of eight that will be announced offshore from Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts which were identified by the federal government for floating wind development.

Martin has served as the Massachusetts outreach manager for Avangrid since 2022. Prior to that, she spent over four years managing marketing, community affairs, and external affairs for the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in Boston. She also served as the Operations and Constituent Services Director to Massachusetts State Senator Julian Cyr, who represents Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, after working on his inaugural campaign in 2016.

She has over a decade of experience in public-facing roles, working across state and local government as well as the nonprofit sector.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Northeastern University and has completed the Massachusetts Clean Energy Extension program in offshore wind at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
