The Blue Economy: Creating Innovative Careers and Investment Opportunities

Dr. Tobias “Toby” Stapleton, a recognized leader in fostering New England’s Blue Economy, will present how the Blue Economy is impacting our region, creating innovative careers and investment opportunities, and continuing to be a major economic driver in our region. We’ll also discuss how policy makers understand the importance of the Blue Economy and are creating public policies to support this initiative (such as President Biden’s Build Back Better program).

About Toby Stapleton
Toby Stapleton is chair of the Blue Venture Forum, the first blue technology-focused venture capital forum in the United States; president of the Marine & Oceanographic Technology Network (MOTN) and managing director of the Blue Innovation Symposium. Toby is an experienced executive and entrepreneur who has held senior leadership roles at a variety of private and nonprofit organizations. He has advised executive-level managers of dozens of blue technology companies, from startups to large multinational firms.

He has also held academic and senior leadership roles, as an assistant professor, assistant dean, dean, and assistant vice chancellor, at two universities. As assistant vice chancellor at UMass Dartmouth, he was responsible for transforming the university’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship into a recognized center of excellence for maritime technology.

He serves on the editorial advisory board of Ocean News & Technology magazine, is a reviewer for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wave Energy Converter SBIR programs, is a graduate of MIT’s Venture Mentoring Service training program, and is a mentor for organizations such as MassChallenge, Creative Destruction Labs and the Association for Clean Tech Incubators Northeast.

Toby holds doctorate and master’s of art degrees from UMass Dartmouth, a master’s degree in Business Administration from Suffolk University and a bachelor of arts from Bryant University.
