South Shore Health Names Dr. Allen L. Smith President, CEO

The South Shore Health Board of Directors has named Allen L. Smith, MD, MS as its next president and chief executive officer.

Smith, who joins South Shore Health on Nov. 30, most recently served as president of the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization, a faculty practice plan for more than 1,800 physicians.

 “There is no one more qualified to lead our exceptional team than Dr. Smith,” said Ken Kirkland, chair, South Shore Health Board of Directors. “He is committed to putting patients first and acting with courage and compassion to provide high-quality care and wellness services. Most important, having started his career as a primary care physician in a community hospital setting, he shares our dedication to ensuring that South Shore residents will continue to turn to us first for care.”

Smith has more than three decades of experience working in some of the most prestigious healthcare organizations in Massachusetts. As president of the BWPO for more than a decade, he provided leadership of the organization’s overall strategy and core functions, including oversight of population management, network development, financial performance, community medicine, physician human resources, and work life issues. He was also involved in clinical strategic planning, physician leadership development, contracting strategy, and health care policy.

Smith also served as a principal in the establishment of South Shore Hospital’s integrated, multi-disciplinary cancer care center involving Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and South Shore Health.

Before his role as president of the BWPO, Dr. Smith was its Chief Medical Officer. Previously, he served as Assistant Vice President for Strategy and Business Planning at Tufts Health Plan and was medical director for Secure Horizons, Tufts Health Plan for SeniorsÔ, the largest Medicare Advantage program in New England.
