February Is Heart Month: Tips For A Healthier Heart

Filed Under: Health Care, All News & Posts

February is American Heart Month, the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States.  No matter where you’re from we all have a story related to heart disease. It can be a friend, family member, co-worker – it’s happening everywhere.

It’s never too early to begin healthy heart habits.

My story began 44 years ago when I was introduced to a healthier lifestyle. I became a regular at the gym, and only used the highest quality vitamins.  I was never overweight and always ate whatever I wanted. But it turned out, it wasn’t enough.

What I did not consider was my vulnerability as several family members (on both sides) had heart disease, or died suddenly at a young age from a heart attack.  It was clearly in my DNA and genetics  and that’s not something we can change.  What we can do is change our lifestyle.  How much we are willing to change is the real question.

Two years ago I experienced an unusual dull ache near my stomach that wouldn’t go away. I went to the hospital and it was discovered that I had blocked arteries in need of repair.

It’s been a journey of acceptance, healing and change.  My strong faith carried me through another major life challenge.  Our thoughts and beliefs have more power than we can imagine.

Learn the basics. Think about one change you can make today on your journey toward a healthier you. One step, one day at a time.

It’s worth it, your health is worth it. Your heart will thank you.
