Big changes are ahead for the 28-acre CapeTown Plaza in Hyannis, a retail center first developed in 1968 and anchored by Kmart.
Cape Cod Gateway Airport and developer WS Development have announced the plans for a multi-phase redevelopment of the property, which will be known as The Landing at Hyannis, a modern lifestyle destination, featuring a refreshed mix of retailers and restaurants, placemaking elements, such as outdoor furniture and many site improvements.
WS Development was awarded the long-term lease of the property, as a result of a proposal process run by the Town of Barnstable in 2018, in anticipation of the previous lease expiring in 2024. Since then, WS Development has worked closely with the town as well as the Cape Cod Gateway Airport, which controls the property, to develop a plan that is expected to yield a vital restoration of the site, as well as significant capital to the Airport and town.
“We are excited to unveil the long-awaited plans for the redevelopment of this central and popular site in Hyannis,” said Katie Servis, Managing Director of Cape Cod Gateway Airport. “We look forward to sharing these plans with the public and discussing the thoughtful multi-phase approach that will be taken to ensure that this shopping area in Hyannis is a destination for locals and visitors alike.”
“We’re thrilled to begin realizing the vision for The Landing and creating a gravitational place for the Cape Cod community at large,” said Amanda Chisholm, Development Director at WS Development.“Our team has greatly appreciated the partnership with the Town of Barnstable; together, we hope to bring to life a welcoming, vibrant experience for all to enjoy.”
With some tenant construction already under way in the former K-mart building, phase one of the project will include major façade upgrades of the main building at the property, remodeling interior spaces and significant improvements to the site including new lighting, paving, landscaping, and a public green with seating.
A public information session will be held Tuesday, May 30, at 6 p.m. at Barnstable Town Hall where officials from Cape Cod Gateway Airport and WS Development will discuss the plans for the site.
The Landing will join WS Development’s portfolio of over 100 mixed-use properties across the U.S, including Massachusetts-based projects such as Wareham Crossing, Mansfield Crossing, Derby Street Shops in Hingham, and MarketStreet in Lynnfield.
