February 21, 2024 (Cape Cod, MA) – Fishing has long been tied to the Cape’s identity and at the beginning of next month, the Cape Cod Technology Council will tackle how innovations have allowed researchers to better understand the animal. The Nature Conservancy in Massachusetts’ Ocean Program Director Christopher McGuire of Falmouth, will lead the talk which takes place on Friday, March 1, 7:30-9 am, at Cape Cod Community College.

“With the Cape’s proximity to the water, it’s no secret that the fishing industry has played a critical role in the character, development and economy of our region,” said Tech Council Executive Director Steve Smith. “That’s why we are looking forward to welcoming Christopher to our First Friday to learn how the industry is strategically using technology to enhance research, management, and conservation efforts.”

During McGuire’s First Friday talk, he will dive into ways underwater drones, satellite tags, probabilistic algorithms, video cameras, and machine learning have advanced our collective understanding of fish and led to enhancements in how fisheries are sustainably managed throughout the state.

Since joining The Nature Conservancy in 2011, McGuire has been dedicated to implementing collaborative solutions to pressing fisheries and ocean conservation challenges. He has been the principal investigator on fisheries research projects with fishermen throughout the Commonwealth, focusing on iconic species that have included Atlantic cod and halibut.

McGuire spent more than 14 years as the nautical science faculty captain at Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Connecticut College, and his Masters of Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island. He holds a 1,600-ton U.S. Coast Guard Ocean Master License.

He serves on several state and federal committees, and currently chairs both the New England Fisheries Management Council’s Habitat Advisory Panel and the Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary Advisory Council.
