Chatham Residents Gail and David Oppenheim to be Honored With “Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year” Award.

CHATHAM, MA – WE CAN is pleased to announce that the 2024 Distinguished Service to Philanthropy Award for “Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year” will be presented to Gail and David Oppenheim of Chatham, MA.  The award will be presented at the 27th annual Philanthropy Day on Cape Cod, which will take place on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at the Emerald Resort: Irish Village in Hyannis.

The non profit organization was amongst others who nominated the couple for the award, which recognizes individuals or families with an exceptional record of generosity and civic engagement. According to Lisa Guyon, Executive Director of WE CAN, “We nominated the Oppenheims’ because the award perfectly embodies their spirit and contributions to our community. Lisa explains that Gail and David (Oppenheim) have donated significant philanthropic gifts in the past few years to local non-profits, over and above their generous annual donations, demonstrating a profound dedication to addressing Cape Cod’s most pressing problems. She wrote, “Their substantial philanthropic gifts have supported organizations focusing on housing, food security, healthcare, scholarships, economic development, and programs for women and children. These donations have not only provided immediate relief but have also established a foundation for sustainable growth and improvement in the lives of countless individuals.”

In addition to their financial contributions, David and Gail are involved in hands-on service. David serves on the board of WE CAN and the Affordable Housing Trust in the town of Chatham. His leadership and expertise in these roles have been invaluable, helping to guide these organizations toward more effectively achieving their missions. Gail’s volunteer work in food security programs and mentoring highlights her commitment to directly addressing the pressing needs of individuals who seek community support.

Gail and David’s involvement in philanthropic efforts on Cape Cod, particularly in the lower Cape, spans over 40 years. This long-term dedication underscores their belief in active philanthropy rather than legacy giving. They advocate for immediate, impactful action, operating under the philosophy that “the need is now.” By investing generously and actively participating in community initiatives, Gail and David have demonstrated how collective efforts—whether through financial means, time, or talent—can drive significant, positive change and foster a vibrant, thriving community.

Their commitment and passion for philanthropy not only address immediate needs but also motivate others to take on leadership roles in charitable endeavors. “Gail and David Oppenheim exemplify the true spirit of giving, and their extraordinary contributions make them more than deserving of the Outstanding Philanthropist Award. We hope that this recognition will highlight their remarkable efforts and inspire others to follow in their philanthropic footsteps to make Cape Cod a better place for everyone,” said Lisa.
