HANOVER, MA, ISSUED JUNE 26, 2024…Local environmental groups, members of the business community and the public were on hand June 15th during the formal dedication of the Let Our Rivers Flow mural at Hanover Crossing.
The 40-foot-long freestanding mural is a multi-year year project in the making spearheaded by the North and South Rivers Watershed Association (NSRWA) in collaboration with local artists Sally Dean Mello, Cathy McCarthy, and Kris Brennen, along with PREP Property Group and the staff at Hanover Crossing.
The mural depicts the North River; its location at Hanover Crossing highlights the successful removal over time of three dams and two weirs along the Third Herring Brook, a tributary of the North River running from Hanover to Norwell. The Peterson Pond Dam and two weirs were the last impediments to migrating species and were removed during the construction of Hanover Crossing. The mural celebrates the return of herring as well as wildlife, plant life and recreational activities along the North River. The unique installation includes a number of hidden pictures for children to find. In addition, a QR code within the mural’s landscape bed delivers a brief history of the project.
The mural is complemented by historical signage detailing the Third Herring Brook Restoration and removal of the Peterson Pond Dam. Portions of the old mill grindstone that were salvaged from the site have been repurposed into benches facing the mural.
The NSRWA called on volunteers to help paint the mural – a call that was answered by many including members of the Cardinal Cushing Centers and New England Village community.
The goal of the Let Our Rivers Flow campaign is to raise public awareness about the impacts dams and other barriers have on rivers and the NSRWA’s work to restore habitats that support river herring and other migratory fish.
The June 15th dedication ceremony included a variety of family-friendly games, prizes from the Hanover Crossing retailers, and refreshments.
““We are thrilled that so many joined us to celebrate this unique installation,” said Ed Callahan, general manager of Hanover Crossing, praising “the outstanding team at the NSRWA and the amazing artists who created the mural. We are also grateful to our signage partner Sign Design for their generous support of materials for the project.”
The NSRWA was created in 1970 by a handful of South Shore river-lovers, bound together by a devotion to the watershed’s natural beauty and a desire to protect it for their own use, and for generations to come. NSRWA began as a group of 400 South Shore residents and has grown to over 1,900 household members. Today the association represents a passionate band of individuals, families, businesses, and other environmental organizations from throughout the South Shore dedicated to protecting regional waters for people and wildlife.
