Robert B. Our Company, based in Harwich, Massachusetts, received two prestigious New England business awards last week.
The company, which is marking its 60th year in business this year, was honored by The Family Business Association (FBA) as Large Business of the Year at the association’s annual awards ceremony Oct. 24 at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston. Also, John Our, Vice President of Robert B. Our Company, received the Contractor of the Year Award from the Utility Contractors Association of New England (UCANE) at the organization’s 63rd Annual Banquet Oct. 28 at the Boston Marriott Newton.
Businesses recognized by The Family Business Association in Large Business of the Year category have more than 150 employees and multiple generations working for the business, or have successfully transitioned from one generation to the next.
Commercial fisherman Robert B. Our Sr. and his wife Joan founded the company in 1957 with five employees, and through the decades grew the business, building on a reputation of trust with his customers and a strong value system and work ethic in his children. The company began pumping septic systems and now has plumbing, mechanical and electrical divisions, and has worked on marine construction, wastewater plant construction and municipal water projects. The second generation of Ours — sons Chris and John and daughter Hope — now manage the business, with a number of third-generation Ours among the 160 current employees.

The Family Business Association is the leading independent, non-profit organization serving family business enterprises in New England. UCANE was established as the first Massachusetts trade association 60 years ago to solely represent underground water and sewer contractors. UCANE is comprised of more than 250 major contractors and associated businessmen and women who perform underground utility construction projects (water, sewer, electrical, gas, fiber optics, etc.) primarily in Massachusetts and throughout the New England states. UCANE lobbies on both the state and federal levels on behalf of the region’s critical clean water and drinking water issues. The association aims to educate the public and elected officials on the clean water needs for the state, the New England region and the nation.
