Heroes In Transition Schedules March, April Programs

Heroes In Transition’s full slate of activities over the next two months is highlighted by two impactful programs which provide critical support to individuals and couples facing extensive challenges that come with military service.

The first, REBOOT, kicks off on Tuesday, March 7, from 6 to 7:45 p.m., at Mashpee TV. Now in its fourth year, the six-session workshop, which runs every Tuesday until April 11, is focused on helping female service members, veterans and military spouses take practical steps to build resiliency by embracing their health and well-being.

Nicole Briggs of Centerville, who has been facilitating REBOOT since the fall of last year, has witnessed just how impactful the program has been.

“Teaching this class has made me see it is much more than I expected,” she said. “Participants are healing relationships, feeling more relaxed at work, parenting their children with more patience, and feeling less overwhelmed. For the first time, some are figuring out how to slow down and be more mindful with how they act and react to triggering events in their lives. These are all huge wins.”

In April, HIT will hold its Spring Couples Retreat at the Cove at Yarmouth. The two-day retreat, which kicks off on Saturday, April 16, and will include team-building challenges at Ten Pin Eatery in Hyannis, is focused on helping military couples improve their communication, strengthen their relationships, and connect with others who understand the difficulties of military service.

In March 2017, Kristen and John Alexander of Sandwich, organized their first Couples Retreat for HIT. The military couple – John is an Army and Army National Guard veteran who was deployed to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq for Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm – understand the challenges posed by military life. It’s why they are so committed to supporting other couples through those challenges through HIT’s retreats which are now held twice a year, in the spring and the fall.

In several instances, the retreats have helped to save marriages, and many couples return year after year to continue working on their relationships.

“Attending these retreats allows military couples the safe space to reconnect, discover new tools that support communication, and learn the power behind teamwork,” said Kristen Alexander, who serves as HIT’s program and volunteer manager. “Relatedness, connection, comfort, and community are words that are consistently shared by our couples following retreat weekends. We are able to watch our community grow and see the relief in their faces when they realize that they are not alone.”

Along with REBOOT and its Spring Couples Retreat, HIT organizes separate monthly outings for service members and veterans; for military spouses; for military couples; and for military families. All programs are free for those HIT serves. To learn more, visit www.heroesintransition.org/events.

HIT’s REBOOT is partially funded through a grant from the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation. HIT’s Community Partners, Cape Cod 5 Foundation, Fairway Financial, and The Lobster Trap also provide consistent year-round funding which makes its programs possible
