With 24 years of expertise as a LSP, Hedman has performed environmental assessment and remediation of sites under both the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) and in accordance with federal regulatory programs.

Specific areas of focus include developing facility spill prevention and stormwater pollution prevention plans, contaminated soil reuse and disposal, groundwater quality assessment, emergency spill response, and Underground Injection Control (UIC) permitting and design.

Client sectors served include airports, water and ground transportation facilities, electric and natural gas utility providers, local and municipal government agencies as well as private sector industries.

Projects of note range in scope from the Burrillville Rail Trail Project in Burrillville, Rhode Island, where soil impacted with petroleum and heavy metals was removed and capped to support the construction of a bike and pedestrian path along a former railroad bed linking the villages of Harrisville and Pascoag, to site assessment and management of the Tel – Electric Dam Removal Project in Pittsfield, Mass., where 4,500 cubic yards of contaminated sediment was removed from the West Branch of the Housatonic River.

In support of a New England based affordable housing developer, Hedman managed projects to remove abandoned heating oil underground storage tanks, mitigate impacts from former industrial use of the properties, and remove hazardous building materials such as lead based paint and asbestos. Prior to property redevelopment, Hedman managed due diligence studies to inform buyers and property owners of environmental issues and potential remedial costs.

“Gary’s considerable experience in environmental assessment and remediation is a tremendous asset ” said Horsley Witten Group President Nathan Kelly. “His knowledge of environmental policies and procedures, along  with  a longstanding working relationship with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)  will be of great benefit to Horsley Witten Group clients.”

“It’s important work we’re doing,” says Hedman, who holds a B.S. in environmental studies from the University of Vermont and is a LSP with the Massachusetts Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup, “our projects often have a significant aspect of environmental restoration involved – from handling contaminated soil in urban areas to support on-site management of stormwater, to managing sediment during dam removal projects. Partnering with our clients and regulatory agencies allows us to design and execute projects that benefit people and the environment, and promote healthy, sustainable communities for the future.”
