KAM Appliances Teams with the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center to Provide Healthy Cooking Classes for Vets

KAM’s classes help veterans enjoy the foods they receive at our pantries.

HYANNIS, MA – KAM Appliances has partnered with the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center to establish a Veterans Cooking Program that helps our region’s military servicemen and women better utilize the food being distributed at our food pantries to make healthier, inexpensive meals.

The inaugural cooking class was held on August 31st 2023, and Chef Linda Davey taught the veterans how to make a healthier version of Macaroni & Cheese, as well as creating a delicious, garden fresh salad with summer veggies, and garnish it with a healthy, four- ingredient low-cost dressing.

KAM hosted its second class for veterans on October 26th 2023, and there, Chef Linda taught them how to use just Ramen noodles, eliminating the salt packet all together, to create a healthy “Pho Soup” with the many assorted vegetables available to them at our food pantries. Since Ramen is a staple in many of our veterans’ homes, they loved being shown a much healthier preparation for such a simple staple food, and the class gave them new ways to add fresh vegetables provided at the pantry to their diet.

Last Wednesday (2/21/24), KAM hosted a Female Veterans Cooking class with Chef Linda who created a new recipe for making a healthy chili. Incredibly, many of those women at

the class had never used a food pantry before and were thrilled to learn they were eligible! Perhaps best of all, the women attending said they felt the same camaraderie with their fellow veterans that they did back when they were in the service. Not only did it bring back memories for them, but they were thrilled to make new friends.

The next day, February 22nd, 2024, three of the Female Veterans from the cooking class visited the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center Food Pantry on Stevens Street, and one made the comment to Barbara-Anne Foley, Outreach & Programs Manager at CIVOC, that “the minute she entered the building she was completely enveloped in love!”

This is our mission, and it is what keeps us motivated to build the right programs for our veterans to attend and while they are there, to also introduce them to additional services they may need!
