User-Friendly Online Platform Targets Tradesmen Seeking Continuing Ed

Whether you are a tradesman working for a large corporation or own a small business, keeping up to date with state codes is key to staying current and legal in the plumbing and gas fitting, electrical and hoisting industries. Continuing education is required, often every two to three years depending on the state, and programs have not always been conveniently available.

Online training courses are not new, but finding easy-to-use platforms has been difficult.

Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing Continuing Education LLC. (M.E.P. Con. Ed.) was founded by experienced software developer Christian Magoun, who identified issues with online training and devised a unique, user-friendly platform for tradesmen.

M.E.P. Con. Ed. is an easier, quicker, affordable and more flexible solution than committing to classroom time and place,” Magoun says.

M.E.P. Con. Ed., LLC is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Professional Licensure and the Office of Public Safety and Inspections to offer online, self-paced continuing education courses.

Online Courses include:

  • NEC Code Update 2020 and 2017 for New England (MA, ME, NH, RI, & VT) Master and Journeyman Electricians, and Electrical Apprentices
  • Continuing education courses for Massachusetts Master and Journeyman Plumbers & Gas Fitters Sessions 11, 12, & 13
  • Massachusetts Hoisting continuing education courses for Class 1, 2, 3, and 4 Hoisting Engineers and Heavy Equipment Operators.

In addition, the companys Hot Work Safety and Training Certificate Online Course is approved by the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal. M.E.P. Con. Ed., LLC also offers several professional development online courses for the trade professionals including Construction Mediation and Construction Arbitration. M.E.P. Con. Ed. will soon be offering OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 (General and Construction) online courses coming this August.

The simple platform of instruction makes obtaining certification as easy as logging in to check your email.

Magoun field-tested the platform on a large number of older tradesmen (age 60 and up). “If the old trade professionals can easily complete our online courses, then we have a winning platform.” He also recruited top instructors with decades of experience.

The M.E.P. Con. Ed. faculty includes two construction industry veterans: master plumber Gerald Fusco, who has more than 40 experience in the construction industry as a successful CEO, Project Manager, Service Manager, Safety Director and Training Director; and Local 103 electrician George Calabrese, whose experience electrical experience spans everything from residential construction including finishing old work and new construction to industrial 900 megawatt power plants. Calabrese managed 600 electricians and contractors and is the only project manager in Kiewit history to have a project awarded the OSHA star.

A third instructor is  Allan H. Goodman,  an experienced arbitrator, mediator and judge on the United States Civilian Board of Contract Appeals, where he adjudicates claims between private contractors and the federal government. Goodman taught Construction Contract Law at University of Georgetown and is the author of two best-selling books on conflict resolution: “Basic Skills for the New Arbitrator” and “Basic Skills for the New Mediator.”

The online courses have been uploaded into an interactive media player that gives the user control over the course and when they want to take it.  The course is self-guided which allows users to seamlessly start, stop and continue the course as often as they like from any web-enabled device until the course is completed; there are no time restrictions or blocked access.

Our quizzes are designed so that the user passes the course and retains the information, without adding more time to the course or creating frustration for the user,” says Magoun. We boast a 99 percent pass rate on all courses.”  All certificates of completion are automatically emailed to the user upon completion, and users’ credits are reported to the state.  Phone and email support is provided to all users.

Christian Magoun has more than 10 years of experience in successfully building online applications and technology assisted training platforms, especially in professional continuing education and certificate training courses for the trades industry. He also has experience working with state boards, municipalities and contractor associations where he gained valuable insight on how to provide the best platform for online training.
