Painting Proceeds Help Fishermen

Artist Paul Schulenburg’s oil paintings capture the lives of commercial fishermen in Chatham, and now his art will help the Fishermen’s Alliance protect the working waterfront during this difficult time.

“The era of corona is yet another storm that the Cape Cod fishing fleet is nobly facing, bringing to bear its strength and persistence. The Addison Art Gallery and internationally recognized artist Paul Schulenburg are excited to be able to support the significant efforts of the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance,” said Helen Addison, the director and owner of the gallery in Orleans.

Through Saturday, May 16, for every Paul Schulenburg painting sold at $5,000 or more, the Addison Art Gallery will donate $500 to the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance; for paintings valued at less than $5,000, the gallery will donate $200.

“Paul Schulenburg captures in oils the gritty and undeniable beauty of the working waterfront and those who depend on it,” said John Pappalardo, chief executive officer of the Fishermen’s Alliance. “His work celebrates the timelessness of our fishing heritage while recognizing its ongoing role in our Blue Economy. We are deeply appreciative that his work can help us do ours.”

Schulenberg is a familiar sight at the Chatham Fish Pier. As a young artist he went there for inspiration and has spent 20 years using brush strokes to tell the stories of the industry.

The artist spends hours at the fish pier, observing lives very different from his, but finding shared history as well.

“I feel a kind of connection in that we both are involved in work that dates back to man’s earliest days,” Schulenberg has observed. “Since before there was recorded history, human beings have caught fish for nourishment, and they have drawn in the sand or on cave walls for pleasure or education – ancient pastimes that hang in a precarious balance in our modern age.”

Several of his arresting paintings have already sold and begun benefiting the Fishermen’s Alliance.
