Ryan’s in South Yarmouth has expanded its bowling and arcade with the addition of axe throwing, cornhole, a new arcade room and more.

The center at 1067 Route 28 has grown by approximately 8,000 square feet into the adjacent area that was previously occupied by a racquetball club.

Ryan’s has four Axe Throwing lanes, all overseen by an experienced axe coach, who monitors for safety and offers instruction for novices and experienced throwers, alike. Anyone at least 18 years-old can play. Walk-ins are welcome pending lane availability, but reservations are highly recommended and can be made online at ryanfamily.com.

Long popular in lumberjack culture, axe throwing as a sport has become a cultural phenomenon, now popular for birthday parties and company outings.  Many locations offer leagues and Ryan’s has plans to implement them in the near future.

The expansion also includes a cornhole area with four cornhole sets that can be rented by the hour, a brand new arcade room, a portable bar, a party area and new bathrooms. The center also offers candlepin and ten pin bowling, a full bar and food service.

“We feel we can really offer an activity for all ages now from bowling to cornhole, and axes to arcades,” said Zack McCaul, Ryan’s Director of Operations.  “Axe throwing may sound intimidating, but most people are surprised at how easy and addicting it is. It’s about momentum and technique, not strength.”

These additions are the first of a multi-phase renovation of the center, McCaul said. New flooring will be installed in the bowling lanes in the coming weeks. The exterior of the building will also be remodeled with a new shingled facade, signs, lighting and a second entrance. Enhancements to the restaurant and expanded food offerings are slated for later this year. The final phase calls for construction of the currently unused second floor, which will provide ample square footage for functions and parties.
