SOUTH YARMOUTH–The Cape Cod Foundation recently awarded over $1 million in scholarships to support more than 150 local students who are beginning or continuing their higher education or pursuing certificate programs. Its partner, the Cape Cod Association, awarded $525,000 to 352 students. Together, the organizations exceeded $1.5 million in scholarship support.

The Cape Cod Foundation currently administers nearly 100 funds that award scholarships annually to students throughout the region. More than 500 individuals applied for scholarships this year.  Approximately 35% of the recipients are first-generation college students.

A team of more than 250 volunteers donated 1,300 hours to the competitive scholarship selection process.

Some of this year’s students will pursue degrees nearby at Cape Cod Community College and Bridgewater State University. Others will venture farther from home to study at Harvard, Northeastern, Syracuse, and the University of Colorado.

They are preparing for careers in business administration, hospitality, law, engineering, medicine, politics, social work, environmental sciences, education, technology, and the arts.

“The need for additional scholarship support in our community is great—especially multi-year support to ensure students have the resources to complete their education,” said Foundation President and CEO Kristin O’Malley. “Through our 35th Anniversary Community Challenge, we are actively fundraising to build additional resources for The Cape Cod Foundation Scholarship Fund, established for local students starting or continuing postsecondary education at any point in their lives.”
